Although Martin Luther himself never actually visited the former free imperial city of Mühlhausen, the city did play an important role in the time of the Reformation and the German Peasants' War due to the activism of Thomas Müntzer (approx. 1490 – 1525). Müntzer was a priest who Luther initially endorsed, however throughout the years he became more and more radical. Müntzer’s use of violence to implement necessary social changes was rejected out of hand by Luther. However, he could not stop the developments from turning into war.
At the beginning of 1525, Thomas Müntzer founded the ‘Eternal Council’ in the town hall and managed to turn the city into a hub for Thuringian radicals and their supporters. During the massacre near Bad Frankenhausen, Müntzer was captured, imprisoned at Heldrungen Castle, tortured and executed on 27 May in Mühlhausen. Luther said afterwards that “Müntzer went quaking to his death and, hastily grabbing at the Bible, swore that he believed everything that was written in it. But it was too little too late”.
