Discover the place where Luther was 'kidnapped' and taken to Wartburg Castle.
Distance 14.5 km
This round trip takes in a section of the Luther Trail to the place near Steinbach where the reformer was kidnapped by soldiers of Frederick the Wise and taken to Wartburg Castle. Make sure you pay careful attention to the signposts just outside Steinbach towards Glasbachgrund. There you’ll find a memorial by the Lutherborn spring as well as a hut with an information board. As you continue the hike, you go up into the Thuringian Forest, follow part of the Rennsteig Trail, past the Schillerbuche beech tree and Gerberstein mountain until you reach the over 100 year old Dreiherrenstein forest tavern just before Großer Inselsberg mountain. You return to Steinbach through the Schleifkothengrund section of the valley. We recommend a detour to visit Altenstein Castle and Park.
At the end of the hike, take some time out and enjoy the wonderful, recently restored Altenstein Castle and Park.
