St Bonifatius Church in Gierstädt was built by the Gotha-based architect Gustav Eberhard between 1844 and 1846. It combines elements of German and English Neo-Gothic as well as Italian Renaissance. It is one of the most beautiful churches in the Fahner Höhe peaks and can be seen from far and wide thanks to its elevated positon. The tradition of fruit growing in the Fahner Höhe region can be traced back to Priest Johann Volkmar Sickler, also known as the ‘fruit priest’. There are around a million fruit trees in the cultivation area, and when they come into blossom, it is a truly magnificent sight to behold.

Due to its advantageous position on the east-west King’s Road (Via Regia) and the ideal climate for agriculture and commercial willow growing, Erfurt was a prime candidate for economic prosperity and wealth. From 1501, Martin Luther studied law at the University of Erfurt on the request of his father. A storm close to the town in the summer of 1505 led to him abandoning his studies and becoming a monk at the Augustinian Monastery.

Author’s recommendation

Be sure to stop at Grundmühle. This rustic restaurant in the middle of the forest makes for a special kind of break.
